Headquartered in Bentonville, AK, Walmart Stores, Inc. is the world’s largest company by revenue that has 11,703 stores and clubs in 28 countries, operating under 63 different names. In Canada, Walmart’s total store count is 410; including 330 supercentres and 80 discount stores located from coast to coast.

To optimize checkout for improved speed of service and customer experience and in response to consumer expectations for more cutting-edge capabilities from retailers, Walmart Canada picked 20 stores from across the country for the roll-out of its new Scan & Go electronic payment-processing system. With Scan and Go, shoppers pick up a portable scanner in the store and scan the barcode on their items before putting them in the shopping cart. They can either pay at the cashier or use self-checkout.

Walmart Canada redesigned the participating stores’ front ends to include a kiosk fixture that houses the scanners near the self-checkout corral. To accommodate an ambitious time-to-market schedule, Walmart Canada required construction plans of the selected stores at very short notice to allow for timely installation of the required fixtures.

Walmart Canada engaged DedON to create construction plans that highlighted the location of the new kiosks. DedON’s reports also included information about any obstacles or layout variations that could interfere with the installation of the kiosks.

The timely documentation of the unique conditions at each store was delivered to the Walmart’s installation and construction teams and the work was completed within the allocated 2-week timeframe.

The accurate and integrated information obtained from the DedON reports allowed Walmart to implement the fixture installation process in a seamless and trouble-free manner. Walmart Canada was able to start the rollout of the Scan & Go technology at the 20 stores right on schedule.
